Best Bottom Cloth Diaper System- New!

Best Bottom cloth diapers are made from some of the best quality PUL I've seen. All Made in the USA too.

The cover is one size fitting from about 7lbs to 35 lbs. The bulk is mitigated with 3 different size inserts to take you from newborn to potty training.

I'd recommend 3 inserts for every 1 cover- so that's 2-3 diaper changes!

For Best Bottom snap-in inserts, my personal preference is the organic cotton & hemp; however, if you prefer faster drying and aren't as concerned about having natural fibers next to baby's skin the stay dry inserts might be the best for you. You can always try a few and each and then stock up on your faves.

I especially love the gussets on the legs for newborns but really they're nice to have until solid food or even potty training!

The tricks to successfully buying locally handmade products!

Buying Locally Handmade Products is an awesome way to support local business and artisans but it comes with some unique challenges.

Most locally made items are produced by hand in small batches and maybe even one of a kind, so if you see something you love or you know your sister, aunt, hubby, etc would love- best to buy it when you see it! So many times people come back into the shop and we've sold out of the items they had in mind.

If what you're looking for isn't there always ask if there's more on the way. Sometimes the biggest obstacle for mama's making items is finding the time to sew, paint, knit etc but they might still have yards of the fabric you loved.

Supporting locally handmade items is definitely worth it!

Padraig Slippers... these are definitely one of our best new additions!

In December 2011, we added the gorgeous and functional Padraig handmade slippers to our storefront in Victoria, BC as well as our online store. I don't think I have ever had so many people come in with stories about one product.

It seems everyday there is a new person in here saying how they have a pair for themselves and love them, or they were the best when their children or grandchildren were young, or how their 9 year old lives in them.

What I really love is Padraig Slippers despite all their success have stayed true. They continue to be handmade in North Vancouver, BC using pure wool, sheepskin and leather- no synthetics or overseas production.

In addition to all these lovely stories, nearly our entire family received slippers for the holidays this year and they're all in love. These are quickly becoming one of my fave new mom gifts too.

When I found out we were expecting our first child, I became acutely aware of not only what I put into my body, but also what I put on my skin – and of course, my baby’s skin once he arrived! When I began preparing for the little guy’s arrival, I was shocked at the lengthy list of ingredients in many products marketed for babies. Many of these ingredients are chemicals, and toxic. This is when I began thinking back to some herbology courses I took, and decided the only way to be sure my baby was only having the purest products on his skin was to make them myself.

Did you know that we have very few laws in Canada and the US governing skin care products? Unlike food products, many skincare products are not tested for their safety, or their toxicity. It is for this reason that I created Momma Goose products. I want to know precisely what is going onto my baby’s skin. After all, we avoid toxic things like alcohol and cigarettes while pregnant, don’t we want to continue with that kind of care once they are born? In all of our products, you can read and understand the ingredients on the labels. We only use wholesome, natural ingredients such as pure coconut oil, sweet almond oil and grape seed oil (to name a few). The two products that have scents to them, Belly Butter Bar and Massage Oil, are very lightly scented with essential oils – nothing artificial. Just like we want to be aware of where our food has come from and what has been done to it…skin care products are just as important. Especially on such tiny, pure little babies.

How did you get started?

I started off with the All Better Balm, as I wanted a reliable diaper cream that would be safe for use with cloth diapers, but also effective against rashes. I made a large batch before the little guy was born, and we ended up loving it so much we used it on everything that came up – newborn rashes, as a barrier cream, and even when he started to get cradle cap. Heck, I love the stuff so much I’ve even taken a tin for myself to use a lip balm and on my knuckles when they get too dry! With much encouragement from my husband, Momma Goose Baby Care was born at the beginning of 2010. We started out with the most basic products, but keep expanding new ideas come to me and as requests come in (including 7 exciting new products just launched Sept. 2011!) – so if there is anything out there you have been looking for, feel free to drop us a line!

We had a difficult time finding safe rain gear, at a reasonable price so we had some rain pants locally made with french seams (so they will not let the water in!).

Many of the commercially available rain suits for children are made from nasty PVC likely softened with Pthalates.

What's wrong with PVC?

Generally, the smell is awful and should be your first clue it's not a meterial you want to wrap your child in.
Health and Environmental Risks are posed by PVC because it releases dioxins (the same chemical found in trace amounts in disposable diapers!), mercury and phthalates into the environment.
Young children, generally explore the world by mouth, and of course typically chew on many toys (and non toys) so it's particularly harmful

Almost been open a month!

Seems like time is flying twice as fast this June between watching Abby grow up (Miss Independent) and having the store open for nearly the whole first month.

Everyone keeps asking how it is going- to which I'm just saying so far so good because I'm quite pleased with the amount of interest from the neighbourhood crowd and also so thankful for so many familiar faces popping in to check it out and shop (in more space than my spare room!).I'm also so thankful for everyone who has told their friends, baby group moms, grandparents, etc to come see me about overnight diapers, sun hats, or wet bags or baby shower gifts.

This is where we are: 3011 Gosworth Rd at the corner of Cedar Hill

The owner of the building and the Gosworth Fish and Chip shop next door (great fries!) has been handing out cards to every mom and pregnant mom he sees- I can't believe some are actually coming in! So nice to have him be so supportive as well.

I'm spending quite a bit of time researching new products from toothbrushes to lunch kits to eco friendly shoes- not that there is a ton of space but I'm enjoying being able to bring in new products. A line of organic cotton nursing bras just arrived today actually!

It's also been tough to watch Tall Tales Books struggle to keep their business going and it's an unfortunate reality check for many small, locally owned business that it's not easy! It's been amazing to see the community support for them as well. I hope people and families will consciously make the choice to shop locally as there is so many fantastic locally owned business in Victoria, BC counting on community support to keep going.

So in about mid-May I put the deposit down for the store, the new Onyx Stainless steel kitchenware arrived in shortly after, then we had a wonderful first day open, the cloth diaper subsidy petition for the CRD is climbing over to over 200 signatures!

Getting ready for our '2nd annual' made in Canada sale for Canada Day! I'm so pleased with the amount of products that are made in Canada at Abby Sprouts- it's awesome but not so easy to find!

So... So far, So good! Thank you all so much for your support and continuing to shop at the store but also spread the word- it so amazing of you all!

Cute Newborn Cloth Diapers on the Cheap

Cloth Diapering a Newborn is really the best way to go because cloth diapering parents report far less blowouts than disposable diapering parents- who wants to clean liquid poop up at 4am? Of course, cloth diapers are better for the environment, baby's health and your wallet.

Buying newborn cloth diapers at $20 or $25 each can add up quickly. 24 diapers * $20 = $480. Seems expensive but in the long run you'd still be coming out ahead of disposables when cloth diapering with a 2 size system for over 2 years for cost + health + the environment.

However, there's a way to do newborn cloth diapering less expensively and just as effective.

Bummis recently came out with the ever popular Newborn pack- it's popular for a reason!

The Great Cloth Diaper Change was a success with a final count of 32 cloth diapered babies being changed at once at exactly 9:30am local time and simultaneously with over 400 other worldwide locations!

Guest Post: Getting a Cloth Diaper Subsidy going in Victoria, BC

Hello Everyone!

My name is Rachel Aube and I am a local Victoria mom who, like yourself, wants to see a cloth diaper subsidy in place for the CRD. I am hoping to gain the support of local businesses, cloth diaper advocates and families who would benefit from the economic and eco-friendly choice of cloth, and at the same time spread the word about how cloth is better for babies.

Abby Sprouts was one of the first businesses I thought to reach out to, as I know how active Steph is in the Victoria cloth diaper community. We also have the support of the Real Diaper Association and the Real Diaper Industry Association, two very important and established cloth diaper organizations. This lends us a bit of weight when we go to the CRD with our proposal, and we have the entire cloth diaper industry behind us, as well as our local advocates and businesses. It is also one of my goals to ‘roadmap’ our process so others can use our example in their regions to advocate for their own local incentives.

We have some very important events happening this weekend, and the opportunity to get the word out about our desire for a subsidy. Thanks to collaboration with City Councilor Philippe Lucas, Victoria City Council has declared April 23^rd as Cloth Diaper Day in Victoria, BC. This also coincides with The Great Cloth Diaper Change (Join the facebook event for updates please) Steph is hosting at the Oaklands Community Center. I have already written a press release, and we can use these events, as well as a newly created Facebook page ‘Cloth Diaper Subsidy in Victoria BC’, to get local support for our cause.

Here is the basic plan

1) Encourage participation in the Great Cloth Diaper Change locally in Victoria BC.
2) Press release for ‘Cloth Diaper Day’ in Victoria BC advocating for a subsidy
3) Start a petition campaign to advocate for a cloth diaper subsidy in the CRD and promote our Facebook Page ‘Cloth Diaper Subsidy in Victoria BC’.
4) Have a town hall meeting early this summer to collectivize our efforts and lobby the CRD
5) Contact CRD Environment Committee, Heartland Landfill, Solid Waste Reduction Committee and present our plan for a cloth diaper subsidy.

There are a variety of subsidies out there, and I have done extensive research on where and which types of subsidies are available. This is important to cite examples of how subsidies are being utilized when we develop our plan. Ideally, the subsidy would be a cash rebate like in most other regions, where you would have to submit the receipts to the CRD for reimbursement. Perhaps the most important part of our plan includes the stipulation that the subsidy is only available if the diapers are purchased in the CRD, thus supporting our local businesses. This is also a great way to ensure that we reduce our carbon footprint and protect baby from potentially unsafe diapers by ordering from overseas or from unknown on-line sources.

Although a significant amount of research and preparation has been completed, we need everyone’s support to make this happen. Please be sure to spread the word about our campaign, ‘like’ our Facebook page, and please forward any suggestions or feedback on how we can successfully advocate for a subsidy in the CRD. Confident Parenting

I am a mom to 3 children whom I adore. There is nothing that I wouldn’t do for them. When they cry and hurt, I want to pick them up and wipe their tears away. When they tell a joke and laugh like crazy, I want to giggle with them. I want to be there for my kids in whatever way they want me to be. But the confidence that I may have now didn’t always exist. After I had my first son many years ago I thought I didn’t want any more children. After I met my boyfriend (now husband), my attitude started to change. We got engaged a couple years after we had been dating and I was pregnant shortly after that. It was such an exciting time for us and we were both looking forward to what the future had in store for us. I think along the way, my older son was excited, but he was also very scared. For so long he was the only child, and all of my attention had been on him. Suddenly now he realized that there would be someone else that he had to share me with.

Before and after Ryder was born, I was scared. After all, I hadn’t done this in awhile and was definitely out of practice. AND things had changed so much! Every day, I was filled was so much joy but also fear of doing something wrong. How would I know he was hungry, how many times did I change him, what if something happened to him, what if I couldn’t hear him crying, and the list went on and on. I read so many books, and they all said something different. One book would say that sleeping with your baby was a bonding thing and then another would suggest that it causes SIDS. Another book indicated that ONLY breast milk was the best for your baby, while said breast milk was ideal but recognized that many couldn’t breast feed and to do what you could. It was overwhelming to say the least. But over time, my husband and I found our groove. We started listening to what felt right for us and our son. We listened to all of the advice we received, and made our own informed decisions. And you know what, nothing really bad happened!

By the time our daughter arrived (one year later), we felt like old pros! We knew about sterilizing the water for bottles, when to introduce solid foods, when they were strong enough to hold their own heads up, and when you could let them sleep through the night without having to feed them. We relaxed A LOT! People would still give advice, (even strangers in the grocery store) but at least now we didn’t feel like we needed to take it. Parenting is such a journey, full of bumps and holes along the way. The best part is the fun you have as you cruise/crawl/or ride over those bumps. That makes it all worthwhile. I know that I am a better parent because of those bumps anyways. At the best of times our house is chaos! It’s always messy, sometimes dinner isn’t ready, our yard could look a little better, it’s never quiet and I long for time in the bathroom alone. But I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s chaos, but it’s my chaos.

Can Funk Rock Save These?

So, we left for Ottawa on the 9th of March.. left a bunch of Abby's diapers in the washer that I wasn't bringing (I'd already resigned myself to having to do a load every day while we were away) and had planned to get my sister (who took care of all your orders while I was away) to toss them in the dryer. No big deal right? Well, I crammed the washer so full that my spin cycle didn't work- actually it's still not working! I told my mom about the diapers but not Jenn, the one with the key- not so smart.

So fast forward to the 21st when we return after a long day traveling with Abby (she's almost 2) after 2 flights and we come home to no power and a washer full of some seriously stinky diapers- yep it was pretty gross. After I panicked and called hydro to see what was going on with the power and then starting wondering if I'd paid my bill- it turned out the main switch got tripped off. Flick and we had power- phew!

Now the diapers, I tried washing on hot with extra Rockin Green and then no soap but something just didn't seem right. Then I finally figured out that I crammed it too full and it wasn't spinning. So tried taking half out and washing again but that still didn't work. Now, it was off to the bath tub with Funk Rock in hopes of getting rid of the smell. I used 4ish tablespoons.

Now I just need to get my washer to spin and see if it's worked! (Then repeat for the other half of my huge load)

Part 2:

It worked!

Wish I could say the same for my washer- had to go to make use of the grandparents!

I used another 3 tbsp of Rockin Green Classic Rockin a 'heavy duty' hot cycle and everything came out smelling clean- with the exception of couple all in ones I had to soak a second time. Even the AIO's are back in use now- smell free.

So glad it worked!

Once you've gotten reusable grocery bags, your fave coffee travel mug, a sippy cup, a wet bag, cloth dapers, your wipes and face cloths, your awesome glass water bottle, reusable food containers and snack bags- you're set up for for success eliminating a large portion of what you could be sending to the landfill.

Now your only barrier left is to remember to bring along all your reusable gear

Cloth Diaper Check List

When you're shopping for cloth diapers it can be overwhelming at first but quickly becomes fun to dress your baby in adorable diapers.

Here's what you need to get started:

18-24 Cloth Diapers

6 Boosters for overnight or outings

24-36 Cloth Wipes (you can't really have enough of these!)

Cloth Diaper Safe Laundry Detergent (Save yourself time, do it right from the start)
1-2 Wet Bags for keeping soiled diapers in while you're out

1-2 Pail Liners (1 for sure, 2 if you want one while the other is washing)

Items that you may find really helpful when cloth diapering but not everyone uses all of these. I suggest keeping some cloth diaper safe diaper cream on hand so you won't be tempted to use something else and later have to scrub it out of your diapers (that's not fun!).

Cloth Diaper Safe All Better Balm or Bottom Balm

Fleece Liners to use with Diaper cream or for stay dry feeling

Funk Rock Ammonia Bouncer (to combat smelly diapers)

Bummis Bio-Soft Flushable Liners (for easy clean up)

I'm so thankful to have made it through the first year because this was merely a dream before Christmas of '09 when my brother bought me the domain name abbysprouts.com and then it was onwards and upwards. Now I'm loving the online business and most of all the new people and customers I have met and befriended over the last year.

There is still dreaming though- new dreams! A location was never in the stars before but we are quickly out growing our space for storage of all our fantastic products and I really love chatting with customers in person. I'm slowly warming up to the idea of opening up shop, brick and mortar style. I've been having fun perusing real estate listings for now and I have a few dream locations but I'm not sure the rent price tag will cooperate. Abby is getting older way too fast and she'll be begging to go to preschool before I know it I'm sure (seriously where is the pause button?).When the right spot comes up though, I think I'll be ready to jump in just like the online jump!

We survived Christmas and Boxing Week- Phew! So What's Next?

Our kiosk space at University Heights is now packed up and we're back to online based sales and free cloth diaper demos from home for now. It was so wonderful to meet so many local customers in person and to bring more awareness to eco-friendly products.

My sister Jenn, worked many hours at the booth too so I'm sure many of you had a chance to meet her as well.

The Green Toys Tug Boats were super popular along with our fantastic wooden stacking rainbows (which we're currently sold out of!). All be it a very small space it was a great chance to get my feet wet with a little brick and mortar reality before making any big decisions on that front. While I really love the online business, it's growing steadily and Abby will be in school before I know it I'm sure so I'm beginning to take a look around at possible locations for Abby Sprouts. I have a feeling it will be along road to find the right space at the right price and terms etc but it's fun to look and dream of course.

Our Clementine Art Crayons were constantly admired by passer by's too.

So What's Next? For now, I'm considering all the extra's that come with a a 'real' location and how that will all play out. I'm also wondering about the importance of parking, accessible buildings, windows and corners, displays, signs and all the other fun stuff that comes with setting down roots for Abby Sprouts in Victoria. Of course, the online shop will continue and probably grow to include more variety as time goes by. I'm always open to new products, requests and special orders. All what ifs and possibilities are fun and exhausting!

Green Toys are one of my fave products in the store. I love the quality, durability, fun, and that they are ethical made from safe and 100% recycled materials in the USA.

Canada recently declared BPA toxic and the chemical commonly found in many plastic childrens items, toys, etc has never been present in Green Toys.

Overnight with Cloth Diapers

When you ask any cloth diapering mama about what she uses at night the majority of the time the answer is one of these three: "I swear by ____", disposables followed by some justification or "I use ___ but it leaks".

Cloth diapers can be used effectively at night; however, for some families it requires a little more thought (and absorbency!) to last 12 hours instead of 3 or 4.

3 Layer Hemp Boosters

Let's start with pocket diapers for night time. Many pocket diapers come with microfiber inserts but often switching to a hemp or bamboo insert for overnight works best. Our night time combination is an AMP Duo Diaper with a bamboo insert and 3 layer hemp booster. I like this solution because it's still fairly trim fitting and most importantly it works!

AMP Duo Diaper used as a Pocket Diaper

If you need more absorbency, change the bamboo for a 3 layer hemp insert with the 3 layer hemp booster. Fold the 3 Layer Hemp booster in half and stuff it to the front for a boy or in the middle for a girl. The drawback is this option is much bulkier.

Another worthwhile benefit to using a pocket diaper at night is you get the fantastic stay dry properties of the micro-fleece against baby's skin which might help to keep your little one sleeping longer. What parent can't do without some extra sleep?

Bamboozle Fitted

A good fitted diaper is another option,especially if you are not able to stuff your pocket diaper with enough absorbency to last overnight because in some cases an overstuffed pocket diaper leaks.

The bamboozle is a night time favorite made from rayon from bamboo in Scotland and comes with an extra absorbency doubler. I find this option works well with a Bummis PUL cover.

AMP Hemp Fitted

Our AMP Hemp fitteds are another popular choice for the longevity and absorbency of hemp. Again, this durable hemp diaper, that's made in Canada, comes with an absorbency doubler to put absorbency where you need it. These can be folded in half in the front of the diaper to better suit a boy.

Remember, any fitted cloth diaper you choose will need a cloth diaper cover to make the diaper waterproof. Wool is a great overnight cover or if you are not sure you're ready for wool yet you'll find easy care PUL covers as well.

Wool covers can absorb 30% of their weight in moisture. Plus, due to the natural antibacterial properties wool, unless the wool covers are soiled, they can be washed every 1-2 weeks, making for a lighter laundry routine. Wool is also incredibly breathable and a fast diaper rash cure.

How Many Cloth Diapers do I need?

This question: "How many cloth diapers do I need?" ends up in an email subject line of my inbox weekly if not daily so I thought it's about time I address it and of course like anything else it depends on your family and your baby.

When you are starting with cloth diapering a newborn baby it's all about keeping the runny mess in it's place and containing it from leaking out. Most parents who switch from disposables can't believe how much better modern cloth diapers are at containing everything and not leaking. The most important part about containing leaks at this stage is a great fitting diaper- if there are gaps around the legs the diaper is inevitable going to leak- with a great fitting dipe like an AMP hemp fitted which has elastic around the legs and can be paired with a Bummis Super Brite Cover you'll be amazed at how you're not cleaning up disposable blow outs!

OK- back to how many diapers you need! This depends on the type of diaper you've chosen to use. So let's start with saying at the newborn stage 24 diapers is ideal of course you can get away with less it just means more washing and more wear and tear on your diapers. If you're choosing a one-size diaper the larger your "stash" of cloth diapers the better because it will mean less wear and tear on diapers that need to last you roughly 3 years being washed 2-3 times a week.

Let's talk about the AMP One-Size Duo for newborns.

This is one of my fave diapers to get families started with. It's simple, it's economically appealing, it's made in Canada, and all AMP Diapers come with a lifetime snap guarantee and quality you can just see. Oh and it's a "one-size fits most" or technically one-size fit 7-38 lbs depending on the build of your baby of course.

Above, is an AMP One-Size Duo being used as what we call an All in two (or AI2). The beauty of this is the insert (that's the 2 Layer Hemp insert) just laid right on top of the diaper and folded in three "hotdog" or long ways. Now this insert can simply be switched out for a clean one when wet and then the outside "shell" or cover can be reused (this just saved you $20).

With newborns I recommend about 12 AMP One-Size Duo's and about 24 inserts of your choice (usually bamboo or 2 layer hemp). If your child is a bit older you may be able to get away with a ratio of 3 inserts for every 1 shell.

Oh, but were not done yet, it's called a duo because it can do something else too- Cool right!

You can also, stuff the insert inside the pocket opening, thus creating a pocket diaper. The bonus to this is it's only one piece to put onto baby (great if you have a wiggler!) and the microfleece keeps baby feeling dry. Using the diapers this way as a pocket diaper with a newborn you will need about 24 AMP One-Size Duo Diapers and 24 AMP Inserts of either bamboo or 2 layers of hemp. You can always start with less inserts and if you find you prefer pocket style add more.

Are you still with me?

Now for AIO's (or all in ones) these diapers are just what they're called everything you need to diaper your baby in one. So the super easy comes with a bit of drawback they can take longer to dry but surprisingly the AMP All in ones are quick drying and mine are usually done in 1 dryer cycle on medium heat or they dry fully on the line in an afternoon. The drying time is fast because of the microfiber absorbent inner.

If you choose to go exclusively with All in ones (AIO's) then you'll need about 24 small size, about 18 medium and large size when you get there. Most families use a few AIO's for caregivers, dads, anyone who's a little reluctant to cloth diaper. Myself, I use these often- why make it harder than it has to be.

If you choose to use fitteds, you'll need 24 size small and about 18 size large. Fitted diapers also require a waterproof covers and 6 is about the minimum you'd want to pair with 24 fitteds (8-10 waterproof covers can make life a lot easier). Summer Travelling Survival Series Part 1- The Planning

Seems like everyone is taking a trip this Summer be it a quick camping trip, week long road trip or a 4 hour flight like us- it takes a fair amount of planning on the parental part and even then there is no guarantee it will go off without a hitch (or a few!).

Here's what's on my list so far(please tell me what I have forgotten!)

Big things- Stroller, Car seat, play pen, carry on (back pack- so I can carry Abby with it) and one suitcase (checked). Manageable- I hope so!

My biggest worry is keeping Abby entertained on the flight, I know she will have an inevitable scream at some point but you know.. the less the better.

I Bringing one these- not sure which one would be better yet though the Green toys Stacker on the right made from 100% recycled milk jugs or the made in Germany wooden stacking bowls

They will both be a new toy which I think is key in keeping any child entertained a little longer and I am planning to pack some little Os that can be filled and dumped into the cups. I'll even let her fill them with water if it keeps her happy and quiet.

Next, for the flight is the organic cotton sling- In all honesty she is getting too big for it these days but I figure if she falls asleep (hah!) then I can tuck her into it and have my arms or at least one free for a bit. If I have to go to the bathroom, (I really hope not!), I'll be able to bring her in the sling and then when we get off the plane at our destination I will be able to use it until I can get her into the stroller at the odd ball size baggage claim.

My real plan though- Food, Food and more Food! All the packaged (ahem crap) that she never gets that Grandma buys around here. So far I have in the backpack stonewheat thins, some packaged organic cookies, and some (far too much plastic) individually package strawberry flavoured rice cakes, and an empty sippy cup to be filled on the plane. Actually I plan to buy my first bottle of water in a long time once we get through security just in case we need water- NOW- at some point.

Oh and can't forget to bring a ridiculous amount of soothers because no matter how many we start the day with by bedtime I'm always searching! I have already started searching the house to collect them. (I can't be the only one with this problem!)

Maybe a Binky Bib too just to keep one where we can see it!

A Smart mama told me to pack Abby extra clothes, of course, but what I hadn't thought of was packing an extra set for myself in case of the worst, in the carry on (back pack).

Even though Abby's a little young (15 months) for markers I'm bringing these and a notebook because she loves to scribble with pens- especially on the floor but we'll try to keep it to the notebook. For older kid, I would bring crayons, modeling dough, and markers just to mix it up a bit.

The netbook packed with a bunch of Dora and any other show that stands a chance at holding her attention. I still have to pick up some mini sized over the ear headphones (it's worth a shot- right?) and get a friend tofigure out how to get movies on a netbook with no disc drive..

Why is Buying Made in Canada important?

For me, buying Canadian products is important and I will gladly pay more for the quality. I am always actively searching out made in Canada brands for the shop and I'm happy to say many of our toys, cloth diapers, baby items and more are made in Canada. While not everything can easily be found I think it is important to support Canadian companies who have managed to produce products here.

Little Late but Better than Never All Better Balm Update

Ok, so we're into Day 5 of applying the All Better Balm by Momma Goose and have seen improvement with her horrible rash. Yesterday it seems to flare up more I think because she had a sun dress on and wouldn't stop stretching but still looks better.

On another note is working wonders on relieving my ridiculously painful sun burn from yesterday too. I guess I should have had the Sun Defense on!

Hopefully I'll have one of a rash free baby soon!

Momma Goose All Better Balm Gets a Real Test!

I have tried many products to clear up the rash behind my daughter's knees and I'm yet to have any luck finding a product that will completely clear it and be safe and gentle on her skin. I did try the Lalabee baby butter but it really is only a moisturizer so just helped with the dryness but not the rash itself. It seems to have gone from bad to worse lately and it just looks so sore.

First Line drying Day for Us

I thought it was so great to finally get the diapers on the line for a little natural sun bleaching action and then it rain. One of those spur of the moment 5 minute pours on an otherwise gorgeous sunny day here in Victoria, BC. While we are about twenty minutes away from the beginning of Earth Day on the West coast and I see many fellow organic minded, eco-conscious stores offering "Earth Day Sales" high and low but I think the point is going to be missed if we turn Earth Day into the boxing day equivalent for eco-friendly stores and shops around.

Instead of a 40% off water bottle sale or bakers dozen special, let's reflect on simple changes we can make today and continue with throughout the year.

I don't think it's any big secret that consumerism is not going to save the planet but here's my list of what changes you can make easily.

Stop buying bottled water
Find a fave beverage bottle and use it
Cloth diaper your baby (at least some of the time!)
Compost in your backyard OR
We use community composting to pick ours up
Reuse, Repurpose
Eat Organic on Earth Day (or everyday)

AMP Cloth Diapers arrived a few weeks at Abby Sprouts!

I've had the pleasure of testing out these diapers on Abby myself and what can I say, I love them!

So let's start from the beginning of how these ended up at Abby Sprouts. Another mom recommended them to me and boasted that they were made in Canada. Well I was mostly sold on that. Then I went to place an order with AMP and to my surprise the owner herself was the one I corresponded with. Annie as in AMP (Annie Marie Padorie) was I pleasure to talk to and even packed my order herself. I was in a bit of a rush to these in before one of our cloth diaper parties and they arrived with time to spare!

Did I mention there is a lifetime snap guarantee? The factory is also in their retail store in Winnipeg where Annie can watch over the production herself. Needless to say I was in love with these diapers before they even arrived.

When the diapers arrived I was actually thrilled. The quality was apparent at first glance. The bamboo inserts are incredibly soft and super trim. The colour coding for inserts makes it easy to differentiate and customize the absorbency your little one needs. Blue for 2 layer hemp, Green for Bamboo, Red for 3 layer hemp and then the microfiber. My favourite so far is the sized pocket diapers and one-size pockets. Lavender is my favourite colour choice so far but we also have a lime and a couple others. I think apricot might be the next one.

The waist and thigh snaps can be adjusted separately for a custom fit and the soft stretchy elastic gathers are all around the back, thighs and even the front. Inserts do not come with the diapers so you can customize the absorbency and choose your fibers. If you prefer a quick stuff, microfiber is usually your best choice and if you prefer natural fibers with antibacterial properties against your babies skin hemp or bamboo are your best bet.

So What's an All in 2 and a pocket diaper? How is it a Duo and Why does it work so well?

The above photo is an AMP Duo being used as an All in 2. The benefits to using an All in 2 style diaper is that you can just change the absorbent insert and reuse the outer cover. You can tuck the insert of your choice under the front pocket opening as well. AMP also makes a AI2 (All in 2) that's not a duo and only $15.50.

The above photo shows an AMP Duo being stuffed with an insert as a pocket diaper. The pocket opening is at the front but does not slip out or bunch up because of the soft, elastic gathers that hold everything place. The front opening keeps you away from any solids when "un-stuffing" the pocket for washing. The soft fleece keeps baby feeling dry when used as a pocket too.

The AMP Hemp Fitted Diapers are one of the best quality fitted I have seen. The rainbow coloured surging is adorable too. Made from durable thirsty hemp. They also come with a contoured hemp insert. Super soft, eco-friendly fabric that is far more durable than cotton. A great choice if you plan to cloth diaper more than one baby.

Bottled Water Vs. Tap Water

While 1 billion people lack access to clean, safe drinking water we are choosing to drink it from plastic bottles and pay a ridiculous price for what is nearly free in our own kitchen.

Annie, the woman in the video provides reasonable and easy to implement solutions for "taking back the tap" water as she puts it.

If you don't already have a stainless steel water bottle to ensure you're not grabbing for plastic bottles while you're out. Get one. Stainless steel comes in variable grades depending on nickel content. Most of the major brands use 18/8 but with that knowledge you can choose any bottle on the market while stll getting the same quality of stainless steel.

I'm not perfect. The odd occasion I end up with a plastic bottle after working out because my trainer has them all sitting there.

On Friday March 5, the UK government closes a public consultation on whether or not to create the world’s largest Marine Protected Area around the Chagos Islands.

Commercial fishing companies have voiced their opposition and are trying to keep these reefs open for business as usual. We can’t let that happen -- coral reefs are dying, and fish are fast disappearing from the oceans. This week's decision could be the catalyst that saves our oceans.

Together, let’s send the UK government a tidal wave of global public support and urge them to protect oceans for future generations.

Making Easy Organic Apple Sauce

Some days it's easy to forget the simple things in life. Homemade organic apple sauce is by far one of the easiest kid-friendly foods to make from scratch. I just can't bring myself to pay for the jarred stuff when this tastes better, costs less and gets eaten warm off the stove. Yum!

We go through numerous apples weekly but I always find some Organic BC ones on sale and stuff the fruit drawer. I have a sale addiction- I'll admit it. Once the best and the good apples are gone the bruised, beaten and dropped ones get peeled, cut and tossed into some boiling water. Simple.

Depending on the kind of apple you're using you might have to mash it up a bit with your stirring spoon. My mom always used one of those old fashioned hand potato mashers. I don't have one but they work perfectly! Macintosh just falls apart into perfect sauce. Galas are more prone to keeping their shape. Makes great baby food too and no question about what's in it!

Scuba man as he's called in our house is made by Sprig Toys from recycled food grade plastics and reclaimed wood. Did you know that indoor air can be more polluted than outdoors?

Exposure to pollutants including VOC's (volatile organic compounds) and mould can be the result of poor air quality.

Remember to open your windows, even in the winter to let in fresh and cleanse your home of pollutants.
Quit smoking indoors (actually just quit)!
Don't store paint, solvent or varnishes in your home
Use low VOC paint
Remember to dust and vacuum regularly (does dust actually appear with kids?)
Control Humidity and Allow ventilation!

As my sister and I were scrambling to get everyone outside before the day faded to night this afternoon she calls out: "Grow another arm already"

I thought.. with baby in one arm and sock less toddler anxious to get outside... How great would it be to be a spider and have so many arms you could get so much done. Now I've mastered almost everything with one hand but putting on children's socks is just not a one handed job.

Needless to say the dog got out too but a midst the chaos the kid's had a great play- in daylight!

The past two weeks have been a blur. Although the Christmas sugar high is finally starting to wear off as we are in the beginning hour of January 10th I'm remaining very exciting to start Abby Sprouts.

My sister felted a whole collection of stacking rocks for my little one. I love that they are all a bit different and handmade. Babe actually loves to push them and kick them and pick them up. Even better they are washable but I haven't had the time to try.

The weather was just right today for a January afternoon down town hunting for some eco ribbon. All we found was silk-- Any other ideas?

I receive our first shipment of organic bamboo baby hats, towels, diapers and sleepers this past week. I'm still in awe of how soft bamboo is and I really love the diaper.

My new scookum sewing machine is all set up and ready to go. Now I just need someone who can sew! I taught myself how to knit this fall from mostly trial and error and the great website www.knittinghelp.com

Sewing just seems much more difficult and less relaxing to me. I love that knitting is a slow, stitch by stitch, minute by minute. It's easily put out of the kids way and won't hurt if they get into it. But sewing-- yikes!

It's about quarter past eleven as I find the ambition to write this first post after a night of frustration when trying to produce a website to market Eco-friendly children's products. I feel the need to remind myself of my passion for the environment and my true drive behind launching this new business as it is really much more than a business- it's about the life style I lead and the environment I want to advocate to protect.

It's quiet now. I have time to appreciate my family for purchasing Abby with the exception of one or two items only eco-friendly toys and clothes that were not made of plastic or other toxic materials. I began my battle to greatly eliminate plastic from our lives a short time ago (maybe a couple months ago). My main drive behind it was not purely the toxicity of it, but more the greater effect it was having on our entire planet.
